Returning the day after his eighteenth birthday to California, life in San Francisco's North Beach is fertile ground for glittered beards and playing with gender roles, in a time when it had true shock value while working days as a cabinetmaker at the Exploratorium Science Museum at the Palace of Fine Arts.
